Did you know that your pelvic floor can become weak with age but also our bad habits. It isn’t just pregnancy that can affect the function of our pelvic floor. However, the only time most women are told about pelvic floor health is when they are pregnant.
What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a huge muscle, it has a massive job to do and we need to exercise that muscle just like we do our arms or legs.
How can a Women's Health Physio help?
We had a client, who is a runner, come to clinic recently and see Carrie for a Physiotherapy appointment for pelvic health concerns and we asked her to not just give a review but with runners everywhere getting ready for the London Marathon in April we asked her if she would like to contribute to our blog by writing her story.

How a visit to a Women's Health Physio Changed My Running: From Desperate Toilet Stops to Marathon Goals
As a runner, nothing is more frustrating than the feeling of needing to go to the toilet mid-run. For months, I struggled with this issue. After just a 3-mile run, I’d be urgently searching for a bathroom, and it started affecting my love for running. But after a single physiotherapy appointment focused on pelvic floor health, everything changed. At first, I wasn't sure if a physio could help.
I was experiencing a desperate need to find a toilet after short runs, and the frustration was building.

I finally decided to book an appointment with a Women's health physiotherapist and was recommended HLP Therapy, and I’m so glad I did. It wasn’t just about the pelvic floor exercises, though they were crucial. The appointment gave me more than just a routine of exercises—it gave me a new perspective.
Bladder Training and a new perspective.
We discussed techniques for strengthening the pelvic floor, but the conversation went deeper, covering advice on habits and bladder training. The physiotherapist gave me a wealth of information that helped me understand how everything works together, and how small adjustments could make a big difference. Over the course of just a few months of commitment, I’ve noticed a massive shift. I'm now able to run for a couple of hours without the constant worry of needing the toilet. The exercises, along with the tips on managing urges during runs, have retrained my bladder and pelvic floor. I feel more confident and in control.

London Marathon here I come!
I’m now in my full training routine for the London marathon in April 2025, and the thought of completing it without a single toilet stop now feels possible. My running experience has completely transformed, and I truly believe it was the combination of physio advice, pelvic floor exercises, and the ongoing support that helped me get here.If you're dealing with similar issues, I highly recommend seeing a women's health physio. It’s more than just physical exercises—it’s a conversation that helps you understand your body and how to make it work better for you. It’s been life-changing for me, and it’s made all the difference in my running journey!
