Coping with Breast Cancer Scars

At HLP Therapy, we understand that scars can affect us all in different ways. If you have experienced any kind of surgery, which has resulted in a scar, this may affect you on a physical or emotional level or both.

You may not have been informed on how your scars may look after surgery – or even realise how large the incision would be.

Perhaps It may be your first surgery and you have no idea how to recover well, or if there is anything which can be done for your scars.

Going through breast cancer surgery, mastectomy, lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or reconstruction surgery – you may have experienced these thoughts, feelings and have asked yourself similar questions.
Your body has been changed and you may feel you have changed too. This is why we are here to fully support you in your healing and scar recovery.

Physical & Emotional Support with Scars

Having treated numerous clients who have undergone breast cancer surgery, we know that the scars are a physical reminder of everything you have been through. It’s for this reason we are so passionate about helping to improve the function and feeling of your scars and support you both physically and emotionally with scar treatment.

Treating Breast Cancer & Mastectomy Scars

When treating your breast cancer or mastectomy scars, we use a series of different therapies to help reduce both the tight feeling and appearance of your scars.

Here are a few ways in which we treat your scars:

  • Manual scar massage. We will use and teach you the correct scar massage techniques to effectively treat your scars.

  • Specialist scar equipment such as WINBACK Techar therapy, LymphaTouch device and laser therapy.

  • Oils, creams and gels to help reduce inflammation, improve hydration and itchy scars.

  • Silicone scar sheets. If your scar is red and raised, then silicone helps protect, heal and lock in moisture of the scar and surrounding tissues.

  • Emotional support. We are here to listen and support you as you recover.

Client Feedback from our
Mastectomy & Breast Cancer Scar Therapy

“I visited Hannah at HLP Therapy for Scar Therapy sessions to my mastectomy scar. She is professional, reassuring and I immediately felt at ease. The sessions were very relaxing and gentle. I’m so happy with the results, the scar and surrounding area is noticeably smoother and softer. Hannah also showed me how to care for my scar and exercises to improve my range of motion. I highly recommend!”

Breast Cancer & Mastectomy Scar Treatment FAQ's

What happens at my First Breast Cancer Scar Therapy Appointment?

Your first appointment will be for 60 minutes and will include your consultation, assessment, treatment and personal plan. We will look at you (and your scars) and discuss options for the best course of action, depending on the symptoms you present with.

Will my Breast Cancer / Mastectomy Scars ever heal?

Even though your scars will never disappear, scar therapy is a great way to relieve the tight, pulling, painful and/ or itching sensation of your scars. Additionally, scar therapy can also reduce the appearance of your scars - sometimes quite drastically! Having said that, we can never guarantee how much your scar will change, because this often depends on scar type, skin type, the positioning of the scar, genetics and ergonomic factors.

Does Breast Cancer Scar Therapy Hurt?

No, we always ensure that our clients are comfortable and in full control of their treatment. Scar therapy is gentle, we use light massage-based techniques to help improve your scar recovery. However, if you have painful or very sensitive scars, please inform us within your consultation and we can adjust our treatment accordingly.

How long after my Breast Cancer Surgery or Mastectomy should I have Scar Therapy?

We advise to wait around 6 weeks after your surgery, before you book in for treatment with us. However, please ensure that you have no infections, stiches, staples or openings in your scar before booking, as we will be unable to treat you at this stage. You may want to check with your breast care nurse or consultant, that you are ok to receive scar massage therapy, prior to making a booking with us.

How long do Breast Cancer or Mastectomy Scars take to Heal?

A scar takes two years to reach maturity, which means you have plenty of time to see results from scar therapy treatment within this time frame. However, we treat scars over 27 years old, and still achieve great results! So if you are still experiencing problems with your scars, years after your surgery, book in for an appointment today and see how we can help you. Every scar is different, and everyone’s experience is different, so your scar healing and recovery will be as unique as you are.
